One of the most vital partnerships Sozo Ministries has in Uganda is with Global Outreach, a missionary-sending movement launched by Living Water Ministries Uganda and Pastor Wilberforce Okumu. The explicitly stated conviction of this mission is that "it is the divine right of every human being to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ before they die." Included in this belief is also the reality that Uganda has been a missionary-recieving nation for over 180 years, therefore, it is beyond the time for Uganda to take all that they have recieved and begin giving it away as a missionary-sending nation!
This year's main mission of Global Outreached targeted the city of Arua, which is in the North-West corner of the nation, just a few kilometers from the border with Congo and not too far from the border with South Sudan. As a cross-roads of nations and cultures, Arua is strategically located for taking the gospel both, northward and westward. The city also has a high population of Muslims and non-evangelical Catholics, yet penetration by the "born-agains" (meaning evangelicals and primarily charismatics) has not broadly taken place. For this mission, therefore, we mobilized over 100 believers from around Uganda, and a few from Kenya, South Sudan, Congo, U.K, and U.S., to partner with over 250 local believers to cover the city with the gospel. Sozo Ministries' contribution to the team included the Ingram family, Ap. John Mwangi and Ps. Isaiah Masika from Kenya, Ps. Joseph Okware, Ps. Peter Namonyo, Ps. Ekapu James, and Youth Ps. Joram Ekapu from Uganda (and Juliana Baale, who is also a member of Living Waters).
The mission began with a training weekend, equipping the believers on how to share the gospel, how to incorporate their testimony, how to pray for the sick, and how to deal with those who are demonized. This training was followed by 9 full days of door-to-door outreach in the city, as well as a medical camp, visits to hospitals, schools, prisons, and businesses, and 1-2 daily "mini crusades" in strategic locations around the country. The Sozo leaders were utilized mightily during this part of the outreach, with Ap. John and Ps. Joseph preaching almost daily in the mini crusades, as well as being sent to minister in various churches. Ap. Scott spent much of this time behind the scenes, working with local pastors regarding the soon-coming discipleship/follow-up needs, and helping manage pastoral oversight of the outside team. Liz Ingram headed up the database ministry, which takes all the new beleiver's information and puts it into a computer program, which distributes their contat info to the closest churches to their home, and prints the follow-up lists for each church after the mission.
Once door-to-door wrapped up, it was on to the "mega crusade" in the heart of Arua City. A victory parade set off the festivities, followed by 5 nights of Gospel preaching, accompanied by healing, miracles, and many deliveracnes taking place! For three days, we also held a morning "Believers Mandate" conference, where the church of Arua was ministered to and commissioned in their role to take the gospel onwards. Scott had the priviledge of opening the conference with a message of salvation and repentance, that saw 12 "backsliders" return to the Lord, and then helping close the conference with an impartation service in which dozens, if not hundreds, of beleivers we filled with the Holy Spirit and His gifts!
Back at the mega crusade, Scott also had the priviledge of opening each night's meeting with a healing session, except for one that was led by Ap. John Mwangi. In the evening's Gospel session, Ps. Okumu was joined by Dr. Edith Prakash (Indian in the U.S.) and Ps. Joseph Edoyibo (Nigerian in the U.K.), for a powerful series of sermons pointing people to Christ.
By the end of the two-week mission, our team had counted 3,737 salvations, 863 healings, hundreds of deliverances, and 55 churches equipped and ready for discipleship.
We want to say thank you to everyone who has been praying for this mission, and who generously supported the Sozo Ministries team to participate this year. Please continue to pray for our Pastors who are now back at home in their churches, and committed to take the lessons learned in Arua back to thier members as well!
